8 Signs Your Legacy Is Well Cared For After 60
Someone asked for my thoughts__"first cut is the most important (almost a song)"!
And from my experience of living legacy after 60. I'm not a lawyer, accountant, or legal advisor.
I'm someone who prepared all of this to keep it simple for me and those who follow ))smiles
A will is a start. Legacy is bigger than that. It's the shape you leave behind. It's about your family, your finances, your last wishes, and the story people share once you're gone.
Here are eight signs your legacy is in excellent hands, with a way to check each one for yourself.
1. Your Legal Documents Match Your Real Life
Your will, trusts, and power of attorney should reflect who you are today, not who you were when you signed them. A lot changes in ten years—marriages, grandchildren, moves, falling-outs, reconciliations.
Prompt: Find your will and check the date. If you can't remember signing it, that's the answer.
2. The Correct People Are Standing By
You've named someone for executor, trustee, and healthcare proxy, and they know it. Not just on paper—you've actually said it to them.
Prompt: Call one of them this week and ask if they still remember agreeing to it.
3. Your Beneficiaries Are Current
Life insurance. Retirement accounts. Bank accounts. These designations affect what unfolds, with smiles or frowns. Be clear WHICH applies!
Prompt: Open one account today and look at the name on file.
4. There's One Place Everything Lives
A single file holds the account numbers, the deeds, the policies, the tax records, the safe deposit key. Your family knows exactly where it is.
Prompt: Ask your spouse or your executor where that file is right now. See if the answer comes fast or slow.
5. Your Digital Life Has a Plan
Email, banking logins, photos, social media—somebody should know which of these to close, which to hand over, and which to leave standing.
Prompt: Identify three accounts nobody else in your life knows exist—and need to be known so there are no surprises or complications
6. Your Wealth Is Built to Transfer Well
Taxes and timing matter more than most people plan for, and the decisions TODAY shape what your heirs will untangle later (or not).
Prompt: Ask your financial advisor what happens to one specific account the day you're gone.
7. Your Wishes for Care Are Recorded and Known
An advance directive spells out the care you want and the care you don't, so your family is clear during the worst week(s) of their lives.
Prompt: If this document doesn't exist yet, book the appointment before the month is out.
8. Your Family Already Knows
Not just the plan—the reasoning behind it. Why this heirloom goes to that grandchild. Why the cabin isn't being sold.
Prompt: Pick one thing you're leaving someone and tell them why, out loud, this month.
A legacy plan only works if the surrounding people actually
_understand it,
__comprehend It, and
___value IT.
Paper alone doesn't do that job. Let the conversations of conservations begin!!!
