Use Storytelling and Story-Sharing to Communicate the Vision for Workplace Transition 1319
Workplace transition requires those accountable for sharing - communicating the Vision Story do so in a way that is congruent with the message - the use of media - and in the words of the audience. That is, the Vision Statement remains the same - it's the story that can fluctuate so long as the group listening comes to the collaborative pathway and destination decisions.
Words matter! AND, their congruence matters more through story-telling and story-sharing. When the stakeholders read-to-appreciate and see-to-action the Vision - the persons sharing the Vision Story (& Direction) must have their Face Fingers Feet Fronting Forward through the workplace transition.
The cliche applies: Walk the Talk knowing you many have to run/swim sometimes and move the talking to collaborative conversations more so.
This article is the fourth of 10 exploring Workplace Transition (Workplace Experience - #WPT, #WPX) ... where in workplace terms "transition (internal) is about the organization response to change (external) - knowing "change surrounds every challenge" (Dr. Linda Hines). Herein challenge is about the hindering and helping complementarity of challenges.

Communicate the Vision story through story-telling and story-sharing
Important points for this article include:
- Confirm the vision statement/vision story (keywords - keyword phrases)
- Use message, medium, audience approach to organize communication
- Use story-telling and story-sharing
- Demonstrate the behaviours within the Vision via the transition group modeling the way
Confirm the vision statement/vision story (keywords - keyword phrases)
This action is simple enough - correct?
Why then - do those communicating the Vision Statement via the Vision Story stumble - confuse the audience?
You cannot take words for granted. In whatever sequence you share words - the meaning is up for interpretation and resonance.
Great storytellers - story-sharers get this point - and shape the word combinations by audience.
Use message, medium, audience approach to organize communication
When you organize the communication (the story, the pathway) connect the message, medium, and audience with the three important framing questions.
Message connects why and who
Medium (Media) connects how and why
Audience connects who and how
Why am I telling/sharing this story?
Who is the audience for the storytelling and story-sharing?
How will I tell/share the story?
A video about storytelling and story-sharing from my online course Co-Creating the Well-Living Workplace
Use Story-Telling and Story-Sharing
- Reflect on the importance of stories in your life
- Consider the difference between story-telling (manage) and story-sharing (lead)
- Reflect on the stories you’ll tell and share about creating the well-living workplace
- Recognize stories connect the flow of the journey and selected destinations – guides the listener to hear something similar in different ways
- Use words, images, sounds to embellish your stories
Note the importance of PLOT to your story-sharing - see image to the left!
Worth stating again:
Story-telling is to managing as
Story-sharing is to leading
You manage the systems for the people (story for the many)
You lead person from the system (story connects with the person's system)
Demonstrate the Behaviours Within the Vision via the Transition Group Modeling the Way*
When you tell/share the story remember Face Fingers Feet Fronting Forward ... that is, if you want people to believe you.
The phrase "Model the Way" is one of five leadership practices from the Kouzes and Posner's book - The Leadership Challenge.
Of importance ... congruence between message and which way the face - fingers -feet are pointed
