This article is the first of 10 exploring Workplace Transition (Workplace Experience - #WPT, #WPX) ... where in workplace terms "transition (internal) is about the organization response to change (external) - knowing "change surrounds every challenge" (Dr. Linda Hines). Herein challenge is about the hindering and helping complementarity of challenges.
Determine sense of seriousness, urgency and growth
Important points for this article include:
- complete STEEP examination (Socio-Cultural, Technological, Economical, Ecological, Political)
- identify external realities re: limitations and opportunities
- identify crises points (Where is the source of biggest change?)
- review what hinders and helps the organization of great work
Seriousness, Urgency, Growth
One way to determine the "fitness (what it leads to)" of your workplace transition is to get a sense of the seriousness, urgency, and growth (SUG) you assign the work ahead - your accountabilities.
For a high-level view of SUG use a Low [3-6-9] High scale for each work project - accountability. See diagram to the right!
When all three --> Seriousness - Urgency - Growth are in the 9-9-9 (top left) area of the cube - the bells are ringing - the bands are marching - the trumpets are sounding from the towers - yes, pay attention. More to follow ...
Complete STEEP Examination
As above, workplace transition (inside out) is about the response to Simple-to-Complex change (outside in). There are five major categories of change that are nested systems and flow through each other.
S = Socal-Cultural
T = Technological
E = Economical
E = Environmental
P = Political
That is, you are steep-ed in external issues that you deal with through internal transition.
The more you examine your STEEP situation through SUG the more insights you have to make eco-ethical decisions (with the use of eco-ethical architexture).
Identify External Realities re: Limitations and Opportunities
As you gain insights from your STEEP examination you'll have data for information development.
The reminder here - look for what is hindering and helping you ... it's too easy to look for Limitations only. Look for Opportunities as well.
And, you might find later that the time, effort, and money placed in Opportunities may convert and/or eliminate the Limitations.
Identify Crises Points
From the Limitations and Opportunities list several items will blink like neon signs ... these are the ones that require your attention now.
Limitations are bottlenecks (process) and battlenecks (people).
Opportunities are corridors and door openings.
Review What Hinders and Helps
Keep track of what is hindering and helping you at whatever level you deem important:
- Personal
- Group-Team
- Department
- Organizational
Because the Group-Team Change is often the daily-weekly impetus for your personal transition whereas Organizational Change can influence your career transition as it influences Department Transition - and Group-Team Transition ...
By adding these four dimensions - more stories unfold for you and with others.
Enjoy your storytelling (managing) and your story-sharing (leading) ...
