Mentoring - an educating approach that has a person (mentee, protege, learner) asking you (the mentor) questions, which tap into your lived experience - is a two-way trusted relationship (Doug Lawrence, TalentC) ... usually it's a one-to-one arrangement
Facilitating - an educating approach that has you the facilitator asking a group (your staff, customers, "stakeholders") questions, which access insights for group eco-ethical decision-making - the data collected is sorted as information ... usually as a group, and yet - can happen one-to-one when drawing ideas from a person.

When you lead you influence each person's' performance system.
When you manage you affect the productivity systems in support of the persons.
Think of it this way -
- leader as mentor
- manager as facilitator
- manager-leader as facilitative mentor
And yet ... "better" --> managing-leading as facilitative mentoring.
Take the emphasis off the person (identifier) and link it to the process (outcome).
Practicing managing & leading and facilitating & mentoring, and their integration are core competences to "raise necessity" and "increase productivity" for workplace transition, and to deliver extraordinary experiences with staff, customers - all stakeholders.
