Background
Sitting before my computer, preparing to write this article, I kept asking myself the question, “Where do I start living my extraordinary life?” The accompanying question became, “When do I start living my extraordinary life?”
As with some authors, the blank page is daunting. However, I've learned to keep questioning. Because through questions, I establish connections with a person with whom I'm chatting – a person like you.
From the outset, I wanted to craft an informative article that lures you into the story, one that tempts you to continue reading.
And then it came to me. Because these two questions are like those I ask myself every week, every day about living my extraordinary life, I thought they would be questions you would ask of yourself. Where do I start, when do I start living my extraordinary life?
I'm sure you've heard many responses including, “When I get that work promotion in six months, I can really start living,” or “Once I finish my studies next year, I will get on with living,” or “When the kids leave in two years, we can travel.”
When I reflect on these types of responses, I understand how others value and allocate their time, effort, and money. When people use responses like those mentioned above, I hear them playing the waiting game. “If I wait a little longer, I will get there.” “If we wait a little longer, we will have the time.”
It has been my experience that this 'wait and see' attitude most often moves people from standing on the front porch imagining their contribution to the world to sitting in rocking chairs on the front porch watching the world in front of them.
If I were to ask you these questions right now, what would be your responses?
Your Imagination
Your answers hint at your view of something you long to have in the future. The examples given above illustrate a search for what you need, want, choose, or desire to do. Your responses are an expression of your imagination.
When you make your images real, I say you are Living YOUR Extraordinary Life. And if you are one who is making it happen today, celebrate by saying 'thank you'.
Then consider how you might share your 'how-to' learning. There are many who would benefit from your insights sooner rather than later. Have you thought about sharing your thoughts with others, about sharing your path to living your extraordinary life?
Destination Markers
Or are you someone who answers these two questions with a 'wait and see’ attitude? If you are, I suggest you're living life according to what I call 'destination markers'. Your statements hint at something you are living towards. If you get there, then you have made it.
And have you noticed how these markers keep shifting? You might offer a caution like, “We will start in the summer when it is warmer or we will do that when we finish repairing the house.”
Let me ask you - Are you finding life gets in the way? Are the where and the when slipping through your fingers?
You heard it said before, and it needs repeating many times in your life: Life is a journey, a wonderful, exciting journey with destination respites.
Life does not get in the way. Living life is the way.
Seeing the Two Questions in Another Way
What would happen if you answered the two questions by stating, “I'm living my extraordinary life - starting this second, in this place and in every second and place to follow?” Statement #64 from my book Living YOUR Great Life (2010), comes to mind:
Living a great life involves knowing that you are in the 'place' and on 'schedule'. Where and When you are meant to be is here and now, just as you read these words. This is your time; this is your space. It is uniquely yours. You are Living YOUR Great Life. Have you celebrated that fact?
As you become truly aware of this insight, you gain self-worth. Through expressing your ideas, you move from 'insight to sight,' which benefits you and others with whom you interact. You simply become present.
As DeWitt Jones, a National Geographic photographer shares in his video, Celebrate What is Right with the World, "If you believe it, you'll see it." If you believe you're living your great life here and now, then you are living from your intention. This perspective and the associated actions are a wondrous gift to give family, friends, work colleagues, and yourself.
Inspiration
It is my hope that after reading this article, you are inspired to live your life here and now rather than there and then.
In closing, let me ask you:
- What is YOUR place?
- What is YOUR schedule?
- When you see yourself in your place and schedule, are you an audience member watching or an actor participating?
- Are you using the resources you have here and now to live YOUR life to the fullest today?
- Where do you start, when do you start living YOUR extraordinary life?
