Does a tree - a forest - in its existence express an "ISM"?
Some mornings I wake up with "Hmmm" questions.
Today, it was when I took myself out for breakfast.
~~~ ISM ...
To answer this question, it's best to start with the meaning of ISM ...
Type "define ism" into Google ...
the general consensus is:
"a distinctive practice, system, or philosophy, typically an ideology or an artistic movement." Here
Then, I searched the words ending in "ism" to explore what was available. See this Free Dictionary link as a starting point (... it can help while playing Scrabble))smiles
And so, when ism is added to words to form nouns, then those words can be linked to STEEP issues (with an example):
- Socio-Cultural - racism
- Technological - agism
- Economic - capitalism
- Environmental - biocentrism
- Political - liberalism
And so, nouns created by adding ism describe and explain something - a human construct to understand that something and the associated actions and outcomes.
In understanding - dealing with the something - the actions and outcomes can be hindering, helping, and sometimes neutral depending on your perspective and intention.
ISMs and Trees
When we personify (anthropomorphize) a tree like Treebeard - a forest of "Ents" in the Lord of the Rings (Tolkien) the author brings a storyline to a tree/forest.
At first Treebeard was cautious - the Ents reluctant to act ...
Then they saw what happened to their friends and families. They were cut down to feed the forges the Orcs. Then, they acted, caring about themselves and Middle Earth.
Depending on your interpretation of the tree stories you might bring that same or similar story when visiting a tree - a forest. In doing so, you might bring a foreground or background ism to where you are ...
Walking in an old growth forest
- it's of no use now = agism?
- its beauty is timeless = sensualism?
How about stories where forests house beasts that take you away - "so do not go into the forest especially at night = supernaturalism?
Or seeing forests in misshapen forms suggesting a monster = teratism?
A Tree - A Forest Expressing ISMs
If a tree - a forest were to tell tree stories would the subject matter be about
environmentalism ... the environment is important to all?
anthropocentrism ... humans over nature?
biocentrism ... humans with nature?
I have my perspective - perspectivism?
TO which, when I place my hand on the ground - close to a tree ... I sense what the tree is sharing.
I listen ... I'm guided to do something in being for the world.
I appreciate the naturalness of the tree.
I discern what it means to being natural.
The tree has spoken ...
PS ... there are no carnivorous trees - no need for sensationalism (wiping my brow))smiles
Of the ISMs -
Which are hindering your life?
Which are helping your life?
From my head, heart, and hands ...
Bring stories to trees.
They, listen.
~~~
And it might be fun to expand ISMs like:
- learnism
- educatism
- experiencism
