For Tree Stories 1219 - I read an article with this question as its subject heading:
"Do Experiences With Nature Promote Learning? *
... which got me thinking about how writing a tree story - tree stories are wonderful/wanderful ways to promote learning and educating about nature. And, (co)writing the stories becomes an extraordinary experience.
~~~
Whether a seasoned writer or a grandparent co-writing a tree story on a Saturday morning after a walk in the park with the grandchild, I thought these 10 "treemendous" words can guide your story flow and development.
While each word is great - you might find writing with two or five of them exciting ... whereas, all 10 may tickle your fingers over the keyboard or pull your pen across the paper.
~~~ 10 Treemendous Words for Writing Tree Stories ...
Briefly ... from the perspective of writing for children - without leaving the impression nature/trees are harsh | harmful | hideous - here are ideas to encourage their involvement with nature - with trees.
A TREE
Draw Awareness to "something" in-about-because of nature that is important to the children to learn, for you to educate e.g., conservation, the connection of coniferous and deciduous trees in a forest, planting a tree
Explore Texture in the story like exploring the texture of trees - their leaves/needles, the bark, the exposed roots, fall leaves on the ground, mist in the canopies
Offer Relief in the sense of the calmness you can experience with nature - with trees as a way to counter the hussle of the neighbourhood and over scheduled activities, and computer screens and phone texts (realizing phones are a useful learning-educating tool)
Promote Encouragement for the child to explore and discover meaningful patterns in nature ... see the "verticalness" of the story (like the portrait of a tree) and see the "horizontalness" of the story (like the landscape of the forest)
Enthuse Enjoyment for the outcome of happiness and laughter in the story while weaving in the perilous journey of the "hero" appropriate to the audience
STORY
Describe Safer elements of the story ... like when lost, stay found - that is, if you are lost stay where you are if it's safe. Move if you are in danger to someone safer. Someone will find you if you stay found rather than wonder around.
Introduce Transition ... where a tree/orchard (a) offers fruit to eat (a transactional story) ... (b) introduces the importance of planting, nurturing, harvesting fruit bearing trees for the food supply (a transformational story) ... (c) tells the story of growing abundance as the owner of the orchard and the ripple effects of a tree related business to the family - the neighbourhood (a transcendent story)
Identify Opportunity ... planting a tree has so many benefits from watershed conservation, agroforestry support of food crops, and carbon capture ... explore the science of trees
Supports Relations ... by sitting under the branches of the tree, in the branches of the tree, in the tree house where friends and family join the child for a picnic or conversation about the importance of trees
The Question Why "Y" ... answer questions of the curious why linked to who, how, what, where and when through a story - a story series
Best to you as you write your tree stories - they can branch off in so many directions just as they are rooted in love ))smiles
