Been There, Doing It, Willing to Share!
A mentor is a person who provides ethical advice during the learning adventure of the mentee (protégé, associate, partner, etc) through the questions the mentee asks.
The mentor speaks the truth of lived experience when the mentee is most unlikely ready to listen.
They share their learning experience in a friendly way.
Mentors have a vested interest in mentees gaining insights about themselves (personal development) while improving their performance.
Hobbs (2002)
With the opening of the International Mentoring Community Doug Lawrence and I came up with this definition:
Mentoring is about a two-way, trusted arrangement in which the mentor and mentee can form a deeper and richer collaborative alliance resulting in both learning and growing personally and professionally.
Hobbs and Lawrence (2019)
Mentoring is an educative approach that is re-surging in various professions, even on the shop floors and in warehouses.
Already well established in education, mentoring is a way to capture and pass along ‘lived experience’ that is often not found in journals, textbooks and office filing cabinets. Given the opportunity to listen, learn, and live the experiences of someone who has been there, doing it, willing to share it offer new professionals the possibility of increasing their potential. Benefits abound for everyone involved in mentoring. However, considerable time, effort, and mindfulness must go into to establishing and sustaining a mentoring program for it to succeed.
